It is undoubtedly one of the most famous opening lines to a novel, 'Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again', in Daphne du Maurier's 1938 classic, Rebecca. Manderley is the clifftop mansion where the heroine moves with new husband Maxim de Winter. She is intimidated by its sheer scale and the ghostly presence of de Winter's first wife.

Du Maurier's own first marital home was altogether different, sharing none of Manderley's mystery nor, thankfully, its fire- ravaged end.
