THERE is a story about the great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald appearing in Paris and performing so brilliantly that after the last of many encores, the show's promoter took her out for a gourmet dinner and copious amounts of Champagne.

One thing led to another, to the point where the promoter found himself the following morning gazing upon Ella's ample, tousled figure asleep on the bed. Bleary-eyed and ashamed, he began shaking her. 'For pity's sake,' he begged her, 'sing something.' So it is with Diego Maradona. Confronted by all the rants, tirades and erratic behaviour, sometimes you just have to remind yourself what he did best. I recommend YouTube footage of his sumptuous talents to the naff but strangely appropriate musical accompaniment entitled Life Is Life by the Austrian pop band -- yes, there is such a thing - - Opus.
