Summary


BBC Radio Four recently broadcast a small gem of a programme in 'The Reunion' series. It brought together a group of people who had helped shape the first London Marathon, in 1981. And as the anecdotes sparkled, we reflected once again how this incomparable event has become perhaps the greatest glory of British sport.

Among the group was John Disley, who co-founded the London Marathon with the late Chris Brasher. An undemonstrative man, Disley could not keep the awe from his voice. How did it grow so grandly? How did it come to mean so much to so many? Brasher had a lot to do with that, of course. He was put on this planet to create something astonishing, like the London Marathon. He also wrote superb sports columns, administered a large chunk of the BBC and won an Olympic gold medal. But the London Marathon is his memorial.
