Fixing me with her dark, seductive eyes, Marianne Faithfull said in her sultry, smoky voice: 'Do you want to have sex with me?' What was a man to do? She was 32, a legendary Sixties rock icon and the former girlfriend of Mick Jagger. I was a 21-year-old photographer, who had barely made his way in the world.

It was 1979: a decade after Marianne's affair with Mick Jagger had ended, leading her into a spiral of drug addiction, anorexia and a suicide attempt. I had managed to persuade Island Records to allow me to shoot the cover of her comeback album, Broken English, after the big guns of the time, David Bailey, Barry Lategan and Clive Arrowsmith, had failed to produce the perfect image.
