NINTENDO'S moustachioed mascot Mario has been at the cutting edge of most big leaps in gaming technology. He was called Jumpman when he first appeared in the arcade machine Donkey Kong in 1981, but then renamed Mario by a Nintendo America employee after an Italian landlord he supposedly resembled.
In Super Mario Bros, Mario's 2D world formed a blueprint for game design that's still being imitated. In Super Mario 64, he leapt about one of the first proper 3D worlds in gaming.
