I suppose John Milton, the 17th Century author of Paradise Lost, is still England's greatest poet, if one puts William Shakespeare into a separate category as our greatest dramatist.

When Milton was still a young man, before the English Civil War, in which he took Parliament's side against the Monarchy, Milton wrote L'Allegro, a poem about rural happiness.

Milton Was Right: We've Lost Paradise

It is a warm and human poem; Milton does not tell us about the economics of 17th Century farming, or the yield of milk per cow in the 1630s. He writes about the lives and entertainments of people working on the land. The jobs themselves have not changed much, though the equipment has.
