A BRITISH snowboarder stranded 5,000ft up a mountain at night was plucked to safety after signalling to a rescue helicopter with the light from his mobile phone.

Thomas Murphy, 30, was hit by an avalanche and knocked unconscious while riding off-piste in the French Alps. He came to in pitch darkness to find himself trapped on an icy ridge just 12 inches wide.
