LEWIS HAMILTON walked the streets of Monte Carlo shaking his head in abject despair yesterday after the uneasy defence of his world championship came to an ignominious end in all but name.

At 2.11pm Hamilton had smacked the rear of his McLaren Mercedes into a trackside barrier to condemn himself to another afternoon inhaling the exhaust fumes of men he had driven into the ground last year.
