IT WOULD HAVE been a notable night anyway at Citi Field last Sunday, what with ace pitcher Mariano Rivera engineering a run with a bat in his hands for the Yankees against their crosstown rivals the Mets.

With a ball in his hand this time minutes later, though, it became an evening for baseball's history books. Great New York City rivals that they are, the Mets and the Yankees play in different leagues with different rules regarding pitchers. In the Mets' National League, the pitchers are required to take their place in the batting line-up whereas in American League play, the Yankees' domain, a designated hitter comes off the bench to take his place.
