When Nicholas Worsley decided to build an eco-house on an idyllic plot overlooking the River Severn on the outskirts of Worcester, he wanted to buck the trend for environmentally friendly houses that were 'terribly virtuous but aesthetically dull'.

The finished result, Cobtun, is anything but dull. Known locally as the 'mud house' and named after the cob wall which encircles it, the four-bedroom house won the Royal Institute of British Architect's Sustainability Award 2005.
