MY MOTHER is keen for me to take her to an Irish town called Lisdoonvarna in North Clare this September. When I looked it up on the internet, I discovered that in September every year Lisdoonvarna holds a famous matchmaking festival where partnerless farmers and the like go in search of a mate. My mother is in her 60s and is certainly eligible but I'm not sure I ought to be accompanying her to some sort of Celtic speed-dating event.

Bobbie, by email I DON'T think you can quite describe the Lisdoonvarna festival (www.matchmaker ireland.com) as resembling anything close to speed-dating. The festival, held over a series of weekends, is officially devoted to matchmaking with a range of social events arranged to help facilitate man-woman introductions, but these days it's more of a music and social event than an occasion for farmers to find cheap labour to help bring the cows in.
