TAKE a transfer window, throw in a recession verging on a depression and add a buyer's market, put them all together and what do you get? Four dead weeks of idleness amongst agents, managers and chairmen - and that's allowing for the lunatic Kaka/Manchester City interlude - followed by a mad spree on the last weekend of the month.

When FIFA first mooted the idea in 2001 I was in two minds about it. Now, like Hamlet, I'm not so sure. FIFA's intention was to respond to the swing in the balance of power from clubs to players following the Bosman judgment and the huge inflation of footballers' wages.
