WITH Britain's national debt racing out of control, Gordon Brown might be heartened to hear of an obscure charity set up 80 years ago with the ambitious aim of paying it off.

Any celebrations in 10 Downing Street would be premature, however. For, while the charity has a grand total of Pounds 280million in its coffers, this is more than a tad short of the two trillion pound black hole in Government finances.
