Accusations of banks profiteering at their customers' expense will resurface this week when Royal Bank of Scotland becomes the latest bank to announce multibillion pound figures. Its profits in excess of Pounds 9 billion will eclipse Barclays' Pounds 7 billion.

Yet in Gunnislake and St Just in Cornwall and in Buckfastleigh, Chudleigh and Princetown in Devon not a bad word is likely to be said about RBS, the bank that owns NatWest. This is because it is planning to come to the rescue of these communities once again by providing them with access to local banking facilities.
