A YEAR AGO as he sat slumped in the Carlton changing rooms after struggling to make an impact in a reserve team fixture for the club's affiliate, the Northern Bullants, Zach Tuohy wondered if his decision to walk away from the GAA to play Australian Rules football had been the biggest mistake of his life. Fast forward to this month and Tuohy is one of Carlton's rising stars with three consecutive Australian Football League (AFL) senior games and a spectacular first goal under his belt following his shock ascension to the club's senior list in April. While he is flying now, Tuohy admits he was unprepared for the homesickness which threatened to undermine his AFL existence in his first season as a professional footballer.
'Homesickness is easily the most difficult part of being an Australian Rules footballer,' Tuohy explains. 'Nothing prepares you for it. It was very difficult but it gets easier with time.'
