When that fine actor, the late Denis Quilley, was having difficulties in mastering the role of bitchy gossip Sir Benjamin Backbite in The School For Scandal, he turned to director Jonathan Miller for guidance. Miller asked: 'Do you know Ned Sherrin?' Yet as this entertaining autobiography shows, such a view gives only part of the picture. Indefatigable anecdotalist, witty speaker, film and television producer, radio presenter and consummate man of the theatre, dear old Ned has an engaging enthusiasm for trotting out both bouquets and brickbats about himself. For his epitaph, he would like the reference to him in Kenneth Williams's diaries: 'He is a kind and courteous man.' Despite his media ubiquity, Sherrin remains an enigma. Twenty years ago he 'interviewed' himself for a magazine and concluded: 'Although he had been unfailingly polite, I did not feel I had got to know much more about the man behind the ample facade probably no more than Mr Sherrin knows himself.'See the full content of this document
