When James Nesbitt starred in the recent BBC1 drama Occupation, the once definitely balding television star had miraculously sprouted a lustrous head of hair.

Experts believe that Nesbitt, who has admitted trying various lotions to slow hair loss, is the latest celebrity to undergo a Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) - the new gold standard for hair transplants which takes thousands of healthy hair follicles from the back or sides of the head and inserts them in twos and threes into the bald patch, leaving a natural-looking hair-line. He is not the only star to have a changed appearance. Comedy actor Rob Brydon was recently snapped with a regrown hairline, along with ex-EastEnder Shaun Williamson and Dragons' Den judge Duncan Bannatyne.

Williamson and Bannatyne had hair transplants performed by Dr Bessam Farjo at his medical centre in Manchester. He says: 'The biggest difference I find after the procedure is in the patients' outlook. You can see the change in their self-confidence and self- belief - they are smiling and making more eye contact. For many people, losing their hair is a burden, and then it is gone.'

By the age of 50, about 40 per cent of men have some baldness, and around 75 per cent of them admit to having problems with self- esteem.
