Summary

The Sense Of An Ending by Julian Barnes Jonathan Cape Pounds 12.99 ? Pounds 10.99 inc p&p The Sense Of An Ending is only novella length but packs quite an emotional punch. Tony, a deceptively bland narrator, is disturbed by the suicide of Adrian, whom he knew first as a schoolfriend and then as a rival in love. The women in Adrian's life are not forthcoming as to why he killed himself, but perhaps the diary he left will provide clues ... Julian Barnes unravels the mystery with masterly skill. He springs surprise after surprise without stooping to sensationalism in a crisp, engaging tale that glides effortlessly from the badinage of school history lessons into much deeper emotional waters.

Tides Of War by Stella Tillyard Chatto & Windus Pounds 12.99 ? Pounds 10.99 inc p&p After Harriet and James marry, she stays at home in early-1800s London society while he serves under the Duke of Wellington in the Spanish Peninsular War, and the inevitable infidelities occur. With cameos by the painter Goya and banker Nathan Rothschild, historian Stella Tillyard's fiction debut is great fun, especially sprightly heroine Harriet, who dispenses literary quotes and dabbles in chemistry. But there is too much wooden dialogue and flat-footed description for it fully to take wing.
