My sister-in-law, who works for the NHS Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, told me of a recent memo regarding the grave financial situation her unit faces, asking for any money-saving ideas.
That same day, she had to escort a patient to another hospital by ambulance. After settling the patient, the driver told my sister- inlaw he would not be able to drive her back because of contractual issues - even though it was going back to the NG. Another ambulance driver also wasn't allowed to take her. So she had to call a taxi and waited almost an hour for it. The whole escapade took her off the ward for twice as long as necessary.
