SURROUNDED by watchtowers and patrolled by armed guards, this is the non-descript highwalled compound in south Dublin that will go into overdrive if the euro collapses. The National Mint on the Sandyford Road near the M50 has continually denied rumours it is about to print a new punt.

Or indeed that it has already begun to do so. In September, Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming asked the finance minister Michael Noonan when was the last time the punt was printed.
