Nuala O'Faolain's posthumously published novel tells the story of Rosie Barry, who returns to Dublin after a life of travelling, to care for her ageing Aunt Min. Min gave up her youth to bring up her niece and has now taken to drink and appears to be in decline. But their paths cross only for a short while in Dublin as Min, out of nowhere, moves to America to embark on an energising new life and Rosie discovers her grandfather's house, which she decides to make her home.
