THE SCENE is the check-in counter at Auckland Airport a few days ago. It is early morning, and a queue is forming for the flight to Sydney. In the queue are several goldshirted Australian supporters, licking their wounds after losing the semi-final to New Zealand.

The man on the public address system is breezily brutal. 'Hope you enjoyed your stay with us, ladeez 'n' gennelmen,' he babbles. 'And I hope you'll all come back on Sunday, to see the All Blacks win the World Cup. Heh, heh, heh!'
