GORDON BROWN made a last-ditch bid yesterday to stop the invasion of Gaza in a tense phone call to Israeli premier Ehud Olmert.

Warned by intelligence chiefs that the ground attack was imminent, the Prime Minister phoned Mr Olmert at lunchtime and urged him to call it off, insisting that 'moderation must prevail'.
