Although there was no white smoke coming from the chimney of Ayr's Citadel Leisure Centre last week, I trust the 220 Royal Liver delegates gathered to decide their mutual's fate realised that a takeover by Royal London (see our report on Page 11) is the only option.

Scrutinising Royal Liver's 2006 report and accounts, there is no doubt that chief executive Steven Burnett has done a good job in rescuing the friendly society from a financial abyss since he took over three years ago.
