He acknowledges this, saying he and his wife, actress LaTanya Richardson, 'talk about it all the time'.

'My wife says I'm emotionally disconnected from things,' he says. 'I don't have separation anxiety. Consequently, when I go away on location, she'll call and say, "Do you miss me?" And I'll say, "Well, no." I'm being honest.

'I've spent 35 years of my life with her, so when I'm not with her I think about her, but do I miss her? No. I'm reading a book. I'm watching a film.

I'm trying to figure out what I'll do tomorrow. I don't have those kind of emotional attachments.' This disconnected state, while tough for his wife, is probably what makes Jackson, 57, the most compelling of actors. He doesn't so much act a role as become that role.
