He was replaced as leader of the Tory Party by Margaret Thatcher in 1975 and spent pretty much the whole of the next 30 years moaning about it, in what has been described as 'the longest sulk in political history'. Heath was notoriously rude and aloof, and posterity has not been kind to him.
He was, though, a talented man, and Philip Ziegler's exemplary biography reminds us of his achievements as well as his disasters. Heath was certainly unlucky, but was he cut out to be Prime Minister?
