BY the time you read this column, David Morgan should be comfortably installed in the VIP area of the Harare Sports Club cricket ground. Plump of girth and pink of face, he will relish the music of leather on willow, squint at the sun as it flickers through the jacarandas and, quite possibly, wonder what all the fuss has been about.
Of course, he will remain on full alert, just in case Comrade Mugabe should pop out from behind the sightscreen at the Club House End. The FO's advice will echo in his ears: 'Smile politely, then run like hell. On no account shake the bugger's hand. Jack Straw made that mistake, and he's still paying for it.' But Morgan is not expecting the President of the Zimbabwe Cricket Union to put in an appearance. The old brute may starve his people, torture his opponents and slaughter his political enemies, but he surely will not risk a snub from the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board.
