Summary


The oyster is an unlikely style icon. While the scallop seems designed purely for the pursuit of pleasure all elegant shell and milky plumpness the oyster looks plain dull, a dowdy maiden to the pretty young nymph. Its outer layers are coarse and abrasive, closed tightly against all but the most tenacious of suitors. And the body within is little more than a grey, snotty mass of quivering uncertainty.

Little wonder, then, that Jonathan Swift once wrote, 'He was a bold man that first eat an oyster.' To the uninitiated or plain uninterested they have all the appeal of a tramp's hanky.
