R. T. writes: As a pensioner aged over 65, it seems to me that I may be paying tax at one-and-a-half times the normal rate on some of my earnings. Surely I must have got that wrong?

L. K. replies: I'm afraid that you haven't. Every individual is entitled to receive some income free of tax. This basic personal allowance is Pounds 6,475 for the current tax year. Those aged 65 to 74 get an increased age allowance of Pounds 9,490, rising to Pounds 9,640 at age 75.
