THERE are times - most days, actually - when you wonder what on earth all those Government Ministers actually do. Perhaps they are hands-on dads, washing socks and doing all the shopping and putting out the recycling, but I doubt it. I am quite sure they say to their wives as they scoot for the office every morning: 'You deal with it, darling, I am far too busy and important.'

On Thursday, Treasury Minister Stephen Timms (whose website slogan trumpets, vomit-maki n g l y, 'Working hard for you') was quizzed about 'Sir' Fred Goodwin's near Pounds 700,000 pension. Over and over again, Mr Timms said the Government had been 'under the impression' this reward for failure had been a contractual obligation.
