Recently the prestigious science journal Nature published an American paper opaquely called: 'Melanopsin cells are the principal conduits for rod/cone input to non-image-forming vision'. Despite the obscure title, this work showed that there is a 'third eye' in the eye itself.

At school we learn that the lightsensitive part of the eye - the retina - consists of two types of cell: rods and cones.
