HEART surgeon Michael DeBakey, who performed the world's first coronary bypass, has died at the age of 99. Dr DeBakey was being cared for at the hospital where he carried out his lifelong pioneering work, the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

The son of Lebanese immigrants, he invented a host of devices to help sufferers from heart conditions.
