It's hard to believe now, but for a brief period following their debut at National Pet Week in May 1997, the UK went gaga for Tamagotchi the eggshaped plastic virtual pets that had a habit of bleeping to be fed when a) you least expected it, or b) least wanted them to. In an important meeting, say.

The idea was to care for your electronic pet just as you would a standard, four-legged friend. Using its tiny rubber buttons, you had to feed it, play with it, even clean up its poo all these activities being displayed on its screen.
