THE authorities of modern Britain want to know far too much about us. Almost everything we do is now registered or recorded in a centralised way which could all too easily be abused. Identity cards will soon be introduced. CCTV cameras watch us as we walk, other cameras record us as we drive.

If we travel abroad, we meet a whole new layer of prying and filing, fingerprinting and searching. At home, Government agencies seem to obtain fresh powers every week, allowing them to monitor our phone calls and emails. Even our dustbins are microchipped.
