LIKE most women, every day I take a peek in the shops to see what's around. Of course I don't always buy, nobody could afford to, but I go around and have a poke through the rails and see if there's anything nice. Like most women, I find shopping, even window shopping, therapeutic. It takes you away from the humdrum and melts away your worries.

But, this year, as retailers are bemoaning the lack of custom and shop owners are whingeing about the lack of footfall, it is impossible to do my 'patriotic duty'.
