RUNNING a coal-fired power station amid a raging debate over climate change demands someone tough and able to handle abuse. And when it is the biggest coal-fired plant in Europe and the single biggest producer of greenhouse gases in the country, those qualities are needed in spades.

So it is fortunate that Drax Power has Dorothy Thompson as its chief executive. Cool, elegant and commanding, the 48-year-old London School of Economicstrained mathematical economist effortlessly bats away talk of pollution. Instead she waxes lyrical about the greening of the coal-fired monster she runs by feeding it oats and peanut husks to fire its 30 mighty turbines. By 2011 she hopes such biomass will make up 20 per cent of fuel consumed.
