Chancellor and new father Gordon Brown reckons he has come up with the perfect way to give Britain's babies a stronger financial start in life.

At least Pounds 250 of Government money will be put aside in the Child Trust Fund for every newborn baby. Low-income families will be given Pounds 500 and every household can then pay in up to Pounds 1,200 extra each year to provide an even bigger tax-free nest-egg for their children at 18.
