Sometimes I pity the pumpkin.

It spends most of its season ignored by the British public, who have little time for an oversized squash. And even on Hallowe'en, when this wretched gourd takes centre stage, we ignore the flesh and instead concentrate on slashing ghoulish grins across its skin. When the witches and wizards have retreated back into their covens for another year, the pumpkin is left to rot, collapsing in a soggy pile of turgid pap. It seems an inglorious end to an unremarkable life.
