Common deserves his hard-won reputation as one of rap's most progressive and uncompromising MCs, combining lyrical skill and a willingness to take risks with the ability to reach a mainstream audience.

But lately he has sounded like a man in retreat. Perhaps the experience of 2002's Electric Circus, a wildly ambitious album that alienated as many fans as it dazzled, has made him more circumspect. On the follow-up, Be, notwithstanding the presence of such marvellous tracks as The Corner, he often erred on the side of caution. Now, with Finding Forever (Island, 11.99 inc pp, 01634 832 789, out tomorrow) ** he seems to have lodged there.
