For 36-year-old Mark Bruton-Young, whether or not men can suffer from Fpostnatal depression is a moot point. In 2009, his six-month- old daughter Harriet was found dead in her cot. On Mark's computer were hundreds of Google searches on cot death and ways of killing a baby. He was said to have blamed Harriet for problems in his marriage to fellow architect Clare, and was seeing a counsellor for postnatal depression. Postmortems failed to establish how Harriet died, and last month Mark was acquitted of his baby's murder; Clare stood by him through the two-week trial.

More than two men in 10 can succumb to the baby blues, according to a recent study, with the critical time being three to six months after the birth, when extreme tiredness takes its toll, the responsibility of having a child to provide for hits home, and when a new father may also find himself supporting a partner with postnatal depression.
