Summary

Q My elderly mother lives on her own and, while she gets some services from the HSE, I'd like to provide more care for her. A company that provides care services tells me I can get tax relief on its bills. Is that simply a variant of the tax relief on medical expenses? Are there limits on the amount I can claim? A This special carer's tax allowances is entirely separate from the tax relief on medical expenses, and is potentially more valuable since it is granted at the claimant's top rate of tax.

The carer's relief is granted to someone such as yourself who either pays the full cost or contributes to the cost of employing someone to help care for an incapacitated relative. The person being cared for must be totally incapacitated for the full calendar year but that is waived for the first year of a claim. The Revenue doesn't provide a definition of 'totally' but it seems to be fairly liberally defined and is likely to cover a case such as yours. The care provided must be more than that provided by a housekeeper, though the carer does not have to be qualified.
