TONY BLAIR'S hopes of surviving as Prime Minister looked doomed last night after Labour's grass roots called on him to resign.

The process of appointing a new Labour leader appeared under way after John Prescott dramatically pulled the rug from under Mr Blair's feet yesterday. In an interview the Deputy Prime Minister suggested Mr Blair was on the brink of resigning and the race to succeed him had started.
