WHAT has been so impressive about Rory McIlroy's magnificent challenge for this year's US Masters is how much the young man has matured.

Compared to his performance at the Open Championship last year, when he started so brilliantly but then faded in the tough conditions, he has looked 10 years older in his general demeanour and approach to the game. Rory could have been as many as eight shots ahead at the halfway stage if only a few putts had dropped, so immaculate was his swing and so impressive his ball-striking. No one would ever have guessed that this was only his third time at Augusta, where it can take players years to adjust to the savage demands. There have been some questions asked about Rory's putting stroke but I do not believe it is a problem. He did miss a few on Friday but that was only because he was giving himself so many chances.
