MARKS & Spencer broke new ground last week with the introduction of brands such as Heinz and Hellmann's to its High Street stores, but it was the shelves of own-label pickle and bottled mineral water that were being scrutinised by Patrick Coveney, the youthful boss of foods group Greencore.

As Sir Stuart Rose was parrying shareholder criticism at the M& S annual meeting after a profits warning and his elevation to executive chairman, 37-year-old Coveney, who heads Britain's biggest sandwich maker, was relishing the chance of helping the retail giant regain its reputation as a top food seller.
