IN THE history of all the terrible conflicts on this island, never before have the human remains of one of the victims been desecrated before burial. During the Civil War, the War of Independence and The Troubles, the savagery never extended to what happened this week when the body of David Byrne, 26, was attacked as it lay in the local funeral home.

Somebody who pretended to be a mourner paying his respects entered the funeral parlour in Dublin's inner city where David's family and friends had been grieving over his body.
