SHUTTING down the army barracks in Mullingar, Clonmel, Cavan and Castlebar is a drastic move but one that will save the Exchequer EUR 5m, the Government claims. Saving money is the priority, yet this week we also saw how the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform apologised to John Browne TD for inadvertently paying him a generous ministerial pension, which he had failed to notice in his payslip.
Given that the same department pays out annual pensions to 109 former ministers - who have served at least 24 months and reached the ripe old age of 50, with one-third of them receiving more than EUR 100,000 - it's amazing they even discovered the glitch. It's even more amazing that they apologised to the lucky Mr Browne. But there was not a whisper of contrition to the hard-pressed taxpayers who dutifully supplied the money for such reckless largesse.See the full content of this document
