Throughout the annual film awards ceremony, Amanda Berry, Bafta's ebullient chief executive, will be sitting on her hands. It is, she says, the only way she can keep still. She'll free them every now and then to send a text message to one of her staff, but for the rest of the time, her mobile will be on her lap, set to mute, in the hushed auditorium.
She used to be 'hands on' rather than 'on hands', hauling champagne around and being 'in five places at once'. That work is left to others, now that the Baftas enjoy a global audience and a premier league profile.
