CELtIC captain Billy McNeill missed the Old Firm match on January 2, 1971, due to an injury, but he had joined his team-mates in the away dressing room when word began to filter through that the authorities were dealing with a major incident.

'My first awareness was seeing the club doctor, John Fitzsimmons, deep in conversation with Jock Stein, Sean Fallon and Neil Mochan, and the four of them suddenly disappearing through the door,' McNeill recalls in his autobiography Hail Cesar.
