A SPANISH friend asked me about my trip to Sicily after I sent a postcard from the Scilly Isles - it is difficult to believe such stunning azure waters and long sandy beaches can be part of Great Britain. Yet the short flight from Newquay with my husband and two- year-old son in a Twin Otter propeller plane took us over a sparkling sea. And as we approached, we could see the islands edged with long strips of sand and surrounded by light turquoise water.

There are five inhabited islands and many smaller ones colonised by seals and birds. St Mary's is the largest and home to the historic Star Castle Hotel where we stayed for the next few days. Built in 1593 in the shape of an eight-pointed star, the former Elizabethan fort makes a very comfortable base. High above the harbour - perfect for spotting the Spanish Armada in the old days - it has breathtaking views of the sea dotted with islands.

We had one of the 'garden rooms' in the castle grounds. Our front door opened straight on to the garden, so Lucas could run around and play within sight, and the French windows opened on to a veranda where we could sit and admire the seascape.
