NHS MATERNITY units do not have enough consultants to deliver babies safely round the clock and look after women during childbirth, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said yesterday.

And it warned lives may be put at risk on labour wards unless consultants are prepared to provide out-of-hours cover.
